Maxwell Hardwood Flooring Inc. announced a major expansion of its facilities at the Drew County Court House in Monticello.

Existing industries are the foundation of our economy. It's good news when economic prosperity leads toward expansion, said Gov. Mike Huckabee, We are proud of Maxwell and the opportunity this expansion brings to the community of Monticello.

The expansion will consist of adding a third production line and will create roughly 100 new jobs for the local economy and increase production capacity by 90 percent.

We are happy to partner with Maxwell Hardwood Flooring for this expansion, said Barbara I. Pardue, director of the Department of Economic Development. Our involvement in Maxwell's expansion is an example of how our Department works with existing industries to find opportunities to help them grow and expand.

We are pleased to be able to give back to our community that has done so much for us over the past nine years. We feel this expansion will make a considerable contribution to the economy of Monticello, said Tommy Maxwell, President and CEO of Maxwell Hardwood Flooring Inc., It's a win-win situation for all involved because it creates new jobs, increases production for our customers and boosts local sales of lumber.

The company purchases 60 percent of its lumber from Arkansas mills and the remaining 40 percent from surrounding states. Plans for the expansion are well under way with several additions to existing buildings, the purchase of new equipment for the new high-speed production line and a new 140,000 board foot capacity dry kiln.

Adam Harris, Executive Director of the Monticello Economic Development Commission commented, "The staff and Board of Directors of the Monticello Economic Development Commission are proud to have Maxwell Hardwood Flooring as part of the family of industries in Drew County. Their commitment to quality has allowed them tremendous growth in the flooring industry. From their recognition as a Business of the Year by Arkansas Business to today's announcement of an expansion, Maxwell makes Monticello proud and reinforces the idea that our area is an ideal location to conduct business and to do so profitably.

As the hardwood flooring market continues to flourish the company is expecting a significant annual unit growth over the next five years. Maxwell Hardwood Flooring began operations nine years ago when the company purchased the facilities of Razorback Hardwood, Inc. from the P.E. Barnes Lumber Company. Since the purchase of the company in 1992, Maxwell Hardwood has more than quadrupled its initial investment and increased jobs from 35 to 160. The need for additional production was the key factor in the decision for expansion.
