Minneapolis Area Mom’s Redecorating Dream Comes True

A 36-year-old mother of two from Rochester, Minn., has won her decorating dream – a $10,000 grand prize in the first national Redecorate with Coffee-mate Contest. Kathy Johnson’s winning essay, in the contest sponsored by Nestlé Carnation Coffee-mate and Linens ‘N Things, was chosen from nearly 2,000 entries nationwide.

Johnson plans to use the $10,000 gift certificate from Linens ‘N Things to redecorate her favorite coffee nook – the kitchen. She also receives personal design consultation with well-known New York fashion designer and home decorator Mark Montano.

In addition to winning her decorating dream, Johnson will receive a weekend trip for two to New York City to visit the flagship Linens ‘N Things store in Paramus, N.J.; an elite coffee maker and a year’s supply of Coffee-mate products.

I have never entered a contest in my life, but this one had my name written all over it because my friends call me the ‘Coffee-mate Queen’, said Johnson. I can’t believe a famous New York decorator is actually coming to my home to help me decorate and I finally get to see New York City. I haven’t even begun to comprehend winning a $10,000 shopping spree!

In January 2001, coffee drinkers across America were asked to send in a description of their favorite coffee-drinking spot in their home, describe how that special place influences their overall coffee-drinking experience and why they would like to win a decorating makeover to enhance that room. Entries were judged on originality, uniqueness of response, enthusiasm and redecoration potential.

In celebration of Coffee-mate’s 40th anniversary and its totally new look and packaging, Coffee-mate wanted to make it possible for 17 coffee drinkers and their families to enhance their overall coffee-drinking experiences by offering room makeovers, said Kristin Pearce, Coffee-mate marketing manager for Nestlé USA. "We wanted to help people create the most pleasant environment possible to enjoy the whole experience, their way!

The first prize winner, Mike Rhodes from Mar Vista, Calif., will receive a $2,500 gift certificate from Linens ‘N Things, personal design consultation with Mark Montano, an elite coffee maker and a year’s supply of Coffee-mate products.
