New Paint Technology Raises Performance

All interior colours in the Benjamin Moore colour palette are now available in Ulti-Matte® finish, part of the Benjamin Moore Collection line of premium paints. Benjamin Moore Collection Ulti-Matte® is a silky-smooth, low-reflectance finish which enhances aesthetic colour values while overcoming performance weaknesses of traditional flat finishes.

Until now, applications for flat finishes were limited by their low resistance to wear and abuse, says Peter Routsis, Manager, Strategic Brand Marketing, Benjamin Moore & Co., Limited. Ulti-Matte® is the result of a user-focused development process which makes use of proprietary ingredients, unique to Benjamin Moore, to offer on-the-wall performance comparable to shinier finishes. At each stage of development the new product was tested by Canadian users – consumers, designers and professional painters – to ensure that ease of application and final appearance exceeded their expectations.

The key benefit of a matte finish is low reflectance of light. By eliminating reflections and glare on the painted surface, colours are shown at their full intensity, and imperfections in the substrate are less visible. Designers and consumers welcome the superior rendering of all colours, from high-intensity reds to the purest of whites, when Ulti-Matte® is selected.

But in the case of an Ulti-Matte® finish, beauty is a lot more than skin deep. The paint is easy to use, with minimum tendency to spatter. 'Goes on like butter' was a frequent response from test groups. Also, the new Benjamin Moore formulation avoids many of the limitations associated, until now, with flat finishes. These limitations were mainly concerned with the ability of the painted surface to withstand wear and abuse.

One well-documented drawback of previous flat finishes was the ease with which the painted surface could be ‘bruised’, says Routsis. A knock from a vacuum cleaner or a chair back would often cause local discolouration, which could be very difficult to conceal or repair. Ulti-Matte® uses a totally different chemistry. It is resistant to burnishing, and any damage can be easily repaired with a simple washing or touch-up.

With its luxuriously smooth surface, Benjamin Moore Collection Ulti-Matte® is recommended for all interior applications except locations where the surface is in danger of regular abuse, or where frequent washing and scrubbing may be required.
